BRANFORD–A Guilford woman was awarded $750,000 in a settlement with Planet Fitness, according to the CT Law Tribune.

Susan Butler moved to Guilford in 2009, when she was 62. She quickly joined Planet Fitness in Branford and hired the head personal trainer, John Saville, for 10 sessions. It cost about $75 per hour.

During the first three sessions Butler worked with the rubber ball side of a device that was attached to a flat platform.

During the fourth session on September 22, 2009 the trainer had her work on the platform side. She was instructed to stand on it and was “catapulted” into the air by her trainer. She landed on her hip and wrist, breaking both. The trainer did not offer to help get her up.

According to Butler’s lawyer, the instructions on the Bosu Ball, as it’s called, advise that using the platform side can cause serious injury or death. The trainer said he didn’t know that.

Butler and her husband went to mediation with Planet Fitness before a judge , and the sides agreed to the settlement.
