HARTFORD – The Cooking Channel is seeing fast and furious reaction on social media after they posted a controversial tweet Tuesday morning. It was deleted just about an hour later.

It reads “Exxon Valdez crashed this day in 1989. See the oils that are good to spill (all over salad).”

Almost immediately, people started tweeting back, and the reaction wasn’t good. People were asking whether they let an intern run their Twitter account or whether it was a PR stunt.

The Cooking Channel isn’t the first brand to come under fire for an insensitive or poorly timed tweet.  In December, Best Buy apologized after they joked about a murder that happened outside one of its stores, tying in the popular podcast Serial.
