WATERBURY -- The piece of road stretches only 2.7 miles but the pain is felt across the state. Interstate 84 around the Brass City has achieved notoriety in terms of headaches and delays.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is working to alleviate congestion in the area by expanding I-84 from two lanes to three by 2020 but the process will cause some growing pains.

"The highway is going to be back down to two lanes in each direction, like it is now, but it won't have any shoulders," said Kenneth Fargnoli of the CT DOT. "Barriers will be two feet off the travel lane so it'll be slower."

The project will require the reconstruction and/or rehabilitation of nine bridges along with changes to traffic patterns, roads, off/onramps, and signage, among other things.

Construction is scheduled to officially begin April 1, but drivers won't notice major construction until later this Spring.

Drivers are asked to be prepared for congestion as construction gets under way.
