BRISTOL–The feral cat situation on the Bonnie Acres Property has nearly been eradicated.
Southington cat rescuer Lisa Cyr created the “trap, neuter and release program,” and in the past two months she has caught, neutered or spayed, and vaccinated all but two cats.
“Ms. Cyr’s efforts to take care of these animals have been extraordinary,” said Mitzy Rowe, CEO of the Bristol Housing Authority. “It was disappointing that some people believed we lacked empathy to the plight of these animals. So many of us here at BHA have rescued countless abandoned animals on our property, in many cases taking them into our own personal households.”
Seven of the cats are true feral cats. For them, Cyr has set up two feeding stations and 12 shelters on the Bonnie Acres Property behind the tree line.
“For this program to be successful, it was vital that the community understand why they cannot leave food out for these animals,” said Rowe.
The food and shelter is being paid for by donations from Pet Supplies Plus and the Bristol Housing Authority, which contributed more than $3,500 in food and equipment.
Cyr is still trying to find homes for eight of the cats. One of them is a healthy Siberian breed, which is rare in the U.S. and typically costs a lot of money. The hypoallergenic family-friendly cat can be adopted for just the adoption fee. If interested, call Cyr at 860-681-4304.
