WATERFORD -- You may have seen them in a mall near you, moms working out with a stroller by their side.

The classes are becoming more and more popular and are much more intense than most people would think.

Fit4Mom is a national program with workouts designed to give mothers the strength for motherhood. Stroller Strides is one of the many classes offered.

Fox CT came along for a class with the moms of Fit4Mom of Southeastern Connecticut. They meet several times a week, going from one location to the other inside Crystal Mall in Waterford and when the weather is nice they workout outdoors.

From the outside looking in you may think it’s all about fitness but that’s actually just a portion of what these classes teach both moms and their children.

“Killer workouts,” said Hannah Gigliotti. “I’m usually sweaty and tired and sore the next day.”

“I came to the class and I was blown away,” said Erica Chandler.

Doing burpees and pushups is hard as is but try adding some singing to your workout and you’re in for a real treat.

“It’s actually a lot more challenging,” said Katherine Thuma owner and instructor with Fit4Mom of Southeastern Connecticut. “We are doing strength training, core work, cardio drills but we're interacting with the children while we're doing that.”

“The biggest surprise is that my daughter really loved it, she wasn't wining in the stroller like she was when I was walking and running, she was singing and having a great time,” said Chandler who brought her daughter Nora along for the class.

For some moms the class is a chance to get back in shape and lose some weight but for others like Amy Kobelski it’s a chance to gain support and be a part of a village as they call it.

“I had a really difficult postpardum after my first child,” she said. “I didn't deal with being a new mom very well and I really credit this group to kind of keeping me sane.

“The workouts are great but the community and support of the other moms you become close with is just priceless,” said Thuma.

It’s the accountability of becoming a better mom, a better friend and a healthier person that keep them coming back week after week.

All of the classes are made for moms of all fitness levels. If you’re interested in the program you can find them all across the country. Click here for more information about Fit4Mom of Southeastern Connecticut.
