Clerk at gas station market in New Haven shot, killed

NEW HAVEN--A clerk at a gas station in New Haven was shot multiple times on Monday night and later died.

Police are investigating the shooting, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the Pay Rite Food Store at the Citgo gas station located at 260 Forbes Avenue, near the intersection with Fulton Street.

The male clerk was shot four times--three times in the chest and once in the hand--and was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died an hour later at 8:21 p.m.

The victim has been identified as Sanjay Patel, 39, of New Haven.

Police are searching for two suspects who were involved in the homicide. They were seen running from the area with masks on, and were wearing dark clothes.

Police are also reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses.

Officers taped off a secondary scene, where they say they found items that appear to have been taken from the store. They said this indicates the murder could have stemmed from a robbery.attack.

Forbes Avenue and Fulton Street will remain closed until further notice as police continue their investigation.
