HARTFORD — Gov. Dan Malloy will visit the Interstate 84 viaduct in Hartford Monday to make an announcement about the future of Connecticut’s transportation infrastructure.

The I-84 viaduct is 50 years old and handles more than three times its design capacity. The state is looking at options on how to redesign and improve the highway through the capital city.

Malloy has been pushing his 30-year transportation plan as part of his proposed budget.

The first phase of the plan is a five-year, $10 billion dollar ramp-up to the entire $100 billion transportation vision, which also calls for improvements to the rail system, buses and bike trails.

Early estimates suggest that replacing the I-84 viaduct could cost between $3 and $5 billion.

The governor’s announcement is expected at 11:00 a.m. Monday, at a press conference underneath the viaduct.
