GLASTONBURY- The Glastonbury Town council decided to table a controversial decision on emergency services contracts Tuesday night.

The town’s been served by the Glastonbury EMS, formerly known as Glastonbury Voluntary Ambulance  Association, since 1957. But now some are suggesting a change to the for-profit Ambulance Service of Manchester (AMS).

The consideration is drawing criticism from members of Glastonbury EMS, who say a commercial entity might provide a slower response in times of emergency.

“It could potentially put people’s health at risk,” said Chris Ferrall, a spokesman for Glastonbury EMS.

The town council told the town manager to meet with both entities and discuss their merits before a final decision is made.

“We’ve asked the town manager to negotiate contracts with our two service providers, one for advanced life support and one for basic life support, to make sure that we’ve got a modernized, coordinated system that best serves the interests of the town,” said Stewart Beckett, council chairman.

It’s unclear when a final decision will be made.
