WINDSOR — Town leaders voted unanimously Monday night on a resolution that would prevent the building of a casino in town.
Council members say they’ve received deep opposition to the idea coming from residents.
They also say a casino is not the type of sustainable economic development they’re looking for.
“We’ve worked very hard to establish an economic development program and it’s been very successful in bringing businesses to town and a casino is not the sort of economic development that anyone in an elected position here feels is good for our town” said Councilman Al Simon.
Casino talk comes from proposals the state legislature is considering from both the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot Tribes.
Tribal leaders are pushing to build new casinos in selected areas of the states in order to compete with casinos coming to New York and Massachusetts.
A newly released study commissioned by the tribes shows that not building new casinos would severely hurt the state.
The reports shows casinos in other neighboring states would siphon away $570 million in revenue from Connecticut slot machines and table games and another $133 million in non-gambling revenue.
It would result in, among many things, devastating job loss.
That is why tribal leaders are fighting to build new gaming sites in the state especially among the coveted I-91 corridor between Hartford and Springfield.
