HARTFORD — A mentally disabled man serving a life sentence for a 1987 murder may be released on bail at a hearing following a Connecticut Supreme Court ruling that ordered a new trial.

The bail hearing for 69-year-old Richard Lapointe is scheduled for Friday morning at Hartford Superior Court.

The high court ruled on March 31 that Lapointe was deprived on a fair trial because prosecutors failed to disclose notes by a police officer that may have supported an alibi defense.

Prosecutors have said they will not oppose a request for bail. They are reviewing the Supreme Court ruling and have not indicated how they will respond.

At his trial in 1992, Lapointe was convicted of killing his wife’s grandmother, who was found stabbed, raped and strangled in her burning Manchester apartment.
