HARTFORD — Gov. Dannel Malloy says the state will eventually require body cameras on police officers, but action is not likely this year.
The Republican-American reports that Malloy told reporters Thursday that an estimated cost of $300 to $1,000 per officer for the equipment is an initial hurdle.
The National Conference of State Legislatures says legislatures in 30 states are considering body camera measures.
Connecticut lawmakers are considering a bill in which police departments in three communities would test body-worn video recorders under state police guidance. A pilot program would run from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2016.
Police body cameras have again become an issue following the fatal shooting of an unarmed black motorist by a white police officer in South Carolina. The officer has been charged with murder.
