HARTFORD – The Connecticut River is above flood stage and creating problems in low lying areas in some areas of the state.

Joe Furey, Fox CT Meteorologist, said the river in Hartford was a little over seven inches above flood stage of 16 feet at noon time. The river is expected to rise another half foot during the rest of the day before receding Thursday evening.

The river in Middle Haddam was at 6.9 feet and expected to crest today at seven feet, Furey said. Snow melt in northern New England is the biggest factor in the height of the river, he said.

Portland’s Public Works department said Route 17 was threatened and they temporarily closed it to traffic.
