UNCASVILLE — The president of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority says tribal officials have met with Korean interests to discuss the possibility of operating a casino near Seoul, South Korea.

Robert Soper, president of the parent organization of the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, told The Day that Kevin Brown, chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Council, and Mario Kontomerkos, the tribal gaming authority’s chief financial officer, visited Korea “and had discussions.”

He said the discussion is confidential and preliminary. Soper said the Mohegan tribe is looking at all opportunities outside the U.S., but was not specific.

The Mohegans have tried unsuccessfully to expand in Massachusetts and New York.

The Mohegan Sun and rival Foxwoods Resort Casino are backing Connecticut legislation authorizing up to three small casinos to compete with casino business in Massachusetts.
