WOODBURY–Doughnuts, donuts, round pastries with holes–whatever you call them, they are an American dessert staple.
Thrillist.com honored the time-old treat with a list of America’s top doughnut shops, and one lucky spot in Connecticut made the list.
Dottie’s Diner, “the deluxe destination for delicious donuts,” as the restaurant’s motto goes, is run by Dorothy Sperry. The cake-like doughnuts are usually in traditional flavors, such as powdered sugar and chocolate, but that doesn’t detract from their superiority.

- Candied maple bacon donuts and pistachio-Meyer lemon donuts at Do-Rite Donuts in Chicago
- Hand-torched creme brulee donuts at The Donut Bar in San Diego
- The Bitter Queen, which has a candied ruby grapefruit base topped with a St. Germain elderflower glaze and sprinkled with Campari sugar, at Dynamo Donut + Coffee in San Francisco
- The Chart Topper, a peanut butter and Sriracha duo with with pixie dust, from Glam Doll Donuts in Minneapolis
- A Girl Scout Samoa donut with a caramel glaze, toasted coconut and hocolate drizzle from Glazed and Confuzed in Denver
- A french toast donut at Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts in Charleston
- The Big Baller, a donut filled with Angus beef and house pimento cheese at Gourdough’s in Austin
- The Evil Elvis, a donut with peanut butter, bacon, banana, and honey, from Hypnotic Donuts in Dallas
- A s’mores concoction at Mojo Donuts in Pembroke Pines, Florida
- A chipotle caramel donut at Pink Box Doughnuts in Las Vegas
- These are specials at certain times a year, but Sugar Shack in Richmond, Virginia makes a Cadbury egg donut for Easter and Irish dough bombs for St. Patrick’s Day
