LEDYARD – All units are clear after a quickly-moving, ten-acre brush fire Saturday afternoon near Avery Hill Road in Ledyard, according to Fire Chief John Doucett.

The call came in just after 1 Saturday afternoon and the fire was reportedly under control by around 3:30 p.m.

A total of eight fire departments responded for mutual aid. The Ledyard and Gales Ferry Fire companies responded first and units arriving on scene found a rapidly growing brush fire in the Avery Preserve. Extremely dry and somewhat windy conditions helped to fuel and spread the fire.

Because of the quickly growing fire, mutual aid from the following agencies assisted: Preston, Poquetanuck, North Stonington, Laurel Hill, Voluntown, and Groton. A total of approximately 50 firefighters responded.

Firefighters utilized several all-terrain vehicles to reach remote areas of the fire.

Units held the scene until 5:30 p.m. to conduct overhaul and cleanup operations.

One firefighter sustained a minor burn injury for which he was treated and released on scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation by the Fire Marshall.
