NEW HAVEN — Local police say they are stepping up enforcement near Sheriden-Mauro Middle School and other schools in New Haven.

They’re keeping their eyes peeled for drivers who pass stopped school buses.

According to NHPD, the problem of drivers putting students at risk was brought to light by Ward 27 Alder Richard Furlow.

“We must take a proactive role to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians with a particular focus on heavy traffic areas like Fountain Street,” Alderman Furlow said in a release from the NHPD.

The Connecticut fine for passing a school bus is $465.
