One of the injured firefighters suffered minor burns and was taken to the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital, and is expected to be released soon.
The other firefighter was treated for exhaustion and has been released, said Meriden Fire Chief Kenneth Morgan. Some pets perished in today's blaze.
The four-alarm fire started around noon Saturday in Building 11 of the Crown Village building near the corner of Crown Street and Hall Avenue. Flames could be seen through the roof and smoke was visible from Interstate 691.
Twenty-two units were impacted and 150 people were displaced. A majority of the displaced residents are staying with family and friends but a temporary shelter is being set up at the Crown Village apartment community center.
The New Haven area Red Cross is preparing to have 15 people stay at the shelter, made up of two-three families, The Red Cross has brought two mental health councilors and a registered nurse to be on standby at the shelter, as well.
Mutual aid from Berlin, Southington, Middletown, Middlefield and Wallingford responded to the fire and a total of about 60 firefighters assisted the Meriden Fire Department.
Morgan said at least one man had minor injuries after he jumped from a second-story window to escape a smoke-filled hallway. Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Dunn said arriving firefighters also saw some people jumping out from a balcony.
The complex was destroyed but firefighters kept the flames from spreading to other buildings and woods.
