HARTFORD--After the fatal Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia earlier this week, many have been pointing fingers and trying to place the blame on the country's failing infrastructure.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal and New York Sen. Chuck Schumer launched a campaign on Friday aimed at encouraging Congress to pass the pending rail safety plan.

The plan would require upgrades to rial crossings, such as new lights and signals, and would ensure all trains have a technology that works as a kill switch in case of an emergency in which a train cannot or does not slow down. Some say such a technology could have prevented the tragedy in Philadelphia.

"This four point plan will be a sweeping comprehensive urgent set of measures that will overhaul our rail safety in the United States," said Blumenthal.

He is also pushing for more enforcement of speed restrictions on train tracks, and fines for any safety violations.
