SHELTON – Following a final review of prom dresses Friday morning by an advisory committee at Shelton High School, the final number of those that have been deemed to be inappropriate is six.

A total of 150 prom dresses were reviewed by a committee of seven female staff members, after a controversy grew of what gowns would be allowed at the event.

The committee found 144 to be appropriate.

A week ago, the school headmaster said she would turn students away at the door if their dresses are deemed inappropriate.

Students say the news came as a surprise to them one week and one day before the event, but the school administration says the dress code guidelines are clear from the start of the school year.

Shelton’s prom is Saturday. Many students have had their dresses for months, can’t return them, and say they don’t have time to find another one. Yet, they don’t want to be turned away from an event that they have been looking forward to all year.

“Our goal at Shelton Public School’s is to make this a safe and memorable evening for all of the 549 students attending their junior, senior prom,” said Freeman Burr, Shelton Public School’s superintendent in a statement released by the system’s public relations firm.
