HARTFORD — A bill requiring sexual assault forensic examinations to be made available at the UConn’s main campus in Storrs now awaits Gov. Dan Malloy’s signature.

The House of Representatives unanimously gave final legislative approval to the bill late Thursday.

Lawmakers say the idea came from UConn students concerned that the closest location for sexual assault exams is at Windham Hospital about 8 miles away. There are six acute care hospitals across the state with people trained to use so-called rape kits.

The bill also requires sexual forensic examiners to receive 40 hours of classroom training and have knowledge of legal issues, such as chain of custody.

Last summer, UConn settled a lawsuit by five women who alleged the school didn’t take their claims of campus sexual assaults seriously.
