NEW LONDON — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has told graduates of Mitchell College in New London never to give up on themselves.

The Day of New London reports Malloy spoke to the nearly 200 graduates on Saturday.

Malloy has been a board member of the college known for its academic support programs for students with learning differences. He told the students of his own struggles with dyslexia, including using audiotaped books as an undergraduate at Boston College because he could not read a printed book fast enough to keep up.

Student speaker Christopher McKeon told his fellow students “a lot of our accomplishments were not expected,” saying he was diagnosed with a brain tumor as an infant.

The college’s president, Janet Steinmayer, also was formally inaugurated at the ceremony. She has been in the job since July.
