SOUTH WINDSOR - A high school sophomore was feeling patriotic Saturday on Armed Forced Day and spearheaded an event called the Freedom Run Road Race.

As participants were crossing the 5K's finish line at the South Windsor Community Center grounds, event organizer Sean Reed handed out water and cheered on the last group.

Reed comes from a military family and is thinking about a career in the Air Force.

He put together the race to bring awareness to National Armed Forces Day, always the third Saturday in May and first observed in 1950.

Proceeds from this event go to construction costs of a memorial that will be located by the town pool and that will have all the names of the veterans who served from South Windsor.

Organizing the event puts Reed a step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout.
