NEW HAVEN – Police are praising a city mother for reporting her own son who was in possession of a shotgun.

“We feel quite passionately that the mother who reported her son’s activity could have very well prevented a tragedy. We are grateful she acted responsibly,” said Officer David Hartman.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, the mother called police to report her son had left their apartment and he was armed with a shotgun. Two officers went to her home on Elm Street.

The teen’s mother had grown concerned after noticing that her son looked “pissed,” according to police.  She also said she overheard parts of a disturbing conversation between her son and someone on the phone.

She told the officers that days ago she learned from someone else that her son may have had a shotgun concealed in a black duffle bag. The officers issued an alert for the 17-year-old, passing along to area officers the young man’s description and that he may have been armed.

Another officer spotted the teen, who then took off. While chasing him, police came upon another teen who was known to them and had an outstanding warrant.

Both teens were arrested. Their identities are not being released because of their age.

The teen the worried mother had warned about was in fact carrying a Mossberg Model “sawed-off” 12 gage 600AT pistol-grip shotgun and shotgun cartridges.

“We are impressed with this parent’s decision to call on us to investigate this incident. Community policing depends on the citizens’ trust. We are grateful to this mother for providing us with the valuable information that kept her son and others safe,” said Chief Dean Esserman.

Both teens were remanded to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center under an order to detain by a Judge.
