BLOOMFIELD – Drivers in the area of Park and Blue Hills avenues in Bloomfield are warned to be cautious because a moose was spotted in that neighborhood, according to Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
DEEP said they received calls about the moose from several people in that area who reported seeing it crossing their yards.
Moose near roadways pose a particular danger because once struck, they are more likely to collapse through a car windshield due to their size, according to the DEEP, and they are also difficult to see when driving at night because of their dark color.
Connecticut has a resident moose population estimated between 100-150 animals. They are found most often in the northeastern and northwestern wooded corners of Connecticut but have been seen in most other parts of the state.
All moose and deer vehicle collisions should be reported to police.
Additionally, residents throughout the state are encouraged to report moose sightings on the DEEP website.
