WATERBURY--The evening rush in Waterbury was much different than usual Wednesday. The streets weren’t just congested with cars, but a lot of foot traffic as well.

Thousands of children from across the state crossed the finish line, marking the end of the KiDSMARATHON.

Founded by Olympic medalist Rod Dixon, the staff at KiDSMARATHON say they want to show children that living a healthy life style is fun and attainable. “It was awesome. One thousand percent awesome,” said student participant Louis Berrios.

While Wednesday’s race was just one mile, the journey for students was more like a marathon. For at least eight weeks, they participated in workout sessions and got lessons from fitness coaches.

Waterbury’s Mayor Neil O’Leary says this event started with 500 participants, but had more than 2,000 Wednesday.
