NEW BRITAIN–The Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut recently raised a whole lot of money for the cause.

The 13th annual Scrabble challenge was held at the Aqua Turf Club in Planstville to help raise money for an adult and family literacy program, and $28,000 was raised!

Participants played in teams of six to 10 on one board.

Founded in 1978, the organization provides one-on-one and group literacy tutoring for more than 400 adults in New Britain, Middletown, Bristol, Berlin, Burlington, Cromwell, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Haddam, Kensington, Marlborough, Middlefield, Plainville, Portland and Southington.

All tutors are volunteers and get high-quality training for free.

The organization also founded the Central Connecticut Family Literacy Center, which offers classes for mothers with children under the age of 8 who aren’t fully literate and need to learn English to help their children in school. The classes also help moms work towards a GED, and childcare is provided so the mothers can learn.

The Dutch Point Credit Union and Webster Bank were the leading sponsors of the Scrabble challenge.
