HARTFORD – Friday is National Donut Day, traditionally celebrated on the first Friday of June.
Started by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938, the day honors the group’s “donut lassies,” who served treats and provided assistance to soldiers on the front lines during World War I.
Here’s where you can honor those WWI lassies by enjoying a delicious free doughnut:
Cumberland Farms: The gas station and convenience store chain is giving free donuts to customers who buy a coffee or “Chill Zone” beverage between 5 -10 a.m. Whether paired with a coconut Farmhouse Blend iced coffee or a French vanilla cappuccino, customers can dig into the brand’s fresh donuts – like blueberry and chocolate glazed at newly remodeled Connecticut locations.
Dunkin Donuts: On the heels of announcing its newest Oreo and Chips Ahoy donuts, you can stop by to grab a free treat all day when you buy a beverage. Dunkin’ Donuts has been serving guests signature donuts for 65 years.
Are you ready to celebrate #NationalDonutDay tomorrow, 6/5? Enjoy a free donut with any beverage purchase! http://t.co/lssIG4nF69—

Krispy Kreme: If you happen to be at Mohegan Sun, there is nothing better than a still-warm glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut.
Stew Leonard’s is celebrating from 8 a.m. – noon by giving out a free freshly-made apple cider donut to all of their customers. It’s one of their best-selling, best-tasting donuts, made fresh daily.
