BRIDGEPORT — A federal judge has ruled that a Connecticut lawyer who hasn’t paid his law school loans since 2001 owes the federal government more than $236,000 for his legal education.
The Connecticut Law Tribune reports that Branford attorney Gregory Cohan argued that his responsibility to repay the loan was eliminated, because the federal Department of Education miscalculated his monthly payments and broke a loan agreement that the payments be affordable.
The federal government sued Cohan over the debt in 2011. Cohan said his payments should have been about $100 a month, but the government figured they should be $300. The dispute centered on how Cohan’s income was calculated in 2001.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Meyer in Bridgeport ruled against Cohan earlier this month.
Cohan didn’t immediately return a message Monday.
