VERNON – Vernon and Manchester Police held a joint news conference Monday afternoon at Vernon Police Headquarters to talk about human remains that were found in the woods off West Street on March 13, 2013.

Her family told police she had a history of mental illness. No foul play has been determined in her death and the case is now considered closed.

“We never stopped investigating this incident,” said Detective James Grady with Vernon Police. Police said they want to be clear that this case is not related to any other missing persons cases.vernon remains

Back in September, police released a rendering of her skull.  At the time, they hoped someone would recognize her.

Also in September, the body of another man was found in the same area. Police said his death was not connected to Shapiro’s because his was a suicide.
