NEW HAVEN–Police have made an arrest in a shooting that occurred last summer, leaving a teen dead and two in critical condition.
On August 8, 2014 Jacob Craggett, 15, died after being shot. He was in the car with his brother, Joshua Craggett, 24, as well as Timothy Jones, 24, and a fourth person when the car was approached two or more people who began shooting. A friend was also in the car, but he was not shot. At the time, the Craggetts’ parents said the boys were on their way home from their grandparents’ home and was trying to make their 9 p.m. curfew.
Joshua and Timothy were in critical condition after the shooting, which police don’t think it was random. The shooting occurred at the corner of Davenport Avenue and Vernon Street.
On Wednesday, June 17, 2015 police arrested Lamont “Duce” Edwards, 37, and charged him with Jacob’s murder after an arrest warrant was signed. Edwards is already incarcerated on unrelated charges, and is a felon who has previously been convicted for first-degree robbery, second-degree assault with a firearm and many drug crimes.
As far as the charges connected to the triple-shooting last summer, Edwards was charged with murder, two counts of assault in the first degree with a firearm, criminal attempt to commit assault in the first degree with a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, and criminal possession of a firearm, as well as conspiracy charges.
Edwards is being held on a $2 million bond
Police expect to make at least one more arrest in this case.
On Jacob’s 16th birthday his family met at the cemetery to mark a date Jacob had been looking forward to. At the time Jacob’s mom, Lisa Craggett, said she holds the driver of the car her sons were in when the shooting occurred, Timothy Jones, responsible for her son’s death.
She said it’s clear Jones was feuding with someone. “If you have a beef with someone, to that extent, why would you let someone [not involved in the feud] get in your car,” she asked.
“You shot the wrong person,” said Lisa, who wants justice for her son.
