MILFORD – Police have received complaints regarding a phone scam targeting local businesses.

The scam works like this: a caller claims to be from a local electric utility and threatens businesses to pay an outstanding account balance or threatens to cut off electricity.

The victim is told to purchase a reloadable debit card and then provide the caller with the identification number off the rear of the card as the form of payment.

Once this information is provided, police said, it is very difficult to trace.

According to police, no personal or business financial information should be given to the caller, and businesses should be suspicious  of anybody asking to be paid with reloadable debit cards or money wiring services.

It is always a good idea to verify the legitimacy of the caller with your actual service providers, police said, and they encourage anyone who receives phone calls, emails or mail like this to avoid responding to the caller and to report the information to their local police department.
