BRIDGEPORT — Businesses considering applying for new medical marijuana permits in Connecticut’s largest city may have to wait a while.
The Connecticut Post reports that Bridgeport’s zoning commission wants to extend its one-year moratorium on medical marijuana business permits by another year.
Zoning commission chairman Melville Riley Jr. says the commission wants more time to decide where the city might allow medical marijuana farms and dispensaries. He said the commission wants to form a subcommittee to research how it’s going in other towns.
The first moratorium expired June 3. An extension is on the commission’s June 29 agenda.
Mayor Bill Fitch said he will support the commissioners if they pass a second moratorium. His spokesman says the city needs to give patients access to prescribed marijuana, but community concerns about dispensaries also need to be considered.
