WILLIMANTIC – There was a serious two-car accident in Willimantic Sunday just before 6 p.m. which closed Jackson Street, at the intersection with Carey Street, for 3 hours.

A blue Ford Focus wagon rear-ended a parked minivan that a woman had just gotten out of to cross the street.

The impact sent the minivan into the woman and she became pinned under it.

The wagon careened off the minivan after hitting it and skidded across the road into some bushes. The man driving the wagon had to be cut out of the car.

Ed Rivera, who lives on Jackson St, helped the woman out from under her car.

“She was like looking at me and I had to push the car back and pull her from underneath the front tire,” said Rivera. “I don’t know where I got the strength.”

Both victims were taken to the hospital.

The man was taken to Windham Hospital but flown soon after to Hartford Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The woman was taken to Windham Hospital and remained there with minor injuries that were also considered non-life threatening to her legs.

There were no other injuries reported.

Police are looking at alcohol, speed and distracted driving as factors at this point.

“Anyone who may have witnessed this serious crash is being asked to please contact the Willimantic Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team at 860 -465-3135,” said Corporal S Francis. Parizo., Jr.
