VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A group of boaters in British Columbia, Canada could be in serious trouble after one of them jumped onto a moose swimming nearby.

They posted the video on Facebook and a whistle-blower alerted conservation officials.

The boaters face fines of up to $100,000 under the “Wildlife Act.”

It’s an offense under the Wildlife Act, the harassing the moose,” Conservation Officer Peter Pauwels explained to CTV, “the harassing of the boat, there’s no question that what they’re doing is illegal under the wildlife act, and it’s cruel to the animal, the animal’s obviously stressed out.”

The Facebook page that originally posted the video is no longer up, CTV reports, but the video has spread in news coverage and on other Facebook and YouTube pages.

Wildlife officials hope anyone who recognizes the men in the video to alert authorities.
