AVON--Police held a morning press conference to update residents on their investigation into a sexual assault that happened Thursday.

Police said they were searching for a suspect after a jogger reported that she was sexually assaulted. They are hoping to have a sketch prepared of the suspect over the weekend.

At around 12:09 p.m. Thursday, a woman in her 30s reported that she was running on the Rails to Trails, just south of Scoville Road, when a white man approached her from behind and dragged her off the path. Police say she wasn't dragged too far off the path, maybe a few hundred feet. She says he sexually assaulted her.

She further described him as white, about 5-foot-6 with a goatee, and he was wearing sunglasses, a black shirt with a reflective vest over it and a baseball cap.

She also remembered seeing a tanker-type delivery truck parked near the scene.  "She's saying it's not exactly a oil delivery truck, it more looks like it might have had water in it, so even like a chemical delivery truck," Lt. Kelly Walsh of the Avon Police Department.  "So if anybody saw anything resembling that description, we really would appreciate a phone call.

Police said a passerby saw the victim and called 911. At this time, there is no information on whether or not the suspect had a weapon.

"These types of investigations are very sensitive," police said. They also encourage people to exercise in pairs and to be aware of their surroundings.

Avon Police are increasing the number of patrol units along the Rails to Trails and in the area to protect residents. They are also hoping anyone who may have seen something suspicious in the last few days will report it.

If you saw anything or have any information please call Avon Police at 860-409-4230.
