Off-duty Hartford police officer arrested on assault charges

HARTFORD – Police arrested an off-duty officer after a break in and domestic assault Monday morning.

Police were called to Lincoln Street for a domestic violence incident involving an off-duty police officer shortly after midnight on Monday.

The victim, 47, reported to police that Israel Zea forced his way into the her apartment and assaulted her. When they got there, they found Zea in the second floor apartment being held by two witnesses.  Police said the woman had injuries to her face and was taken to Hartford Hospital.  They said Zea also had facial injuries while being subdued by the two witnesses but refused medical treatment.

The incident was investigates by Internal Affairs and Zea was arrested and charged with burglary, assault, criminal mischief, and criminal trespass. His bond was set at $50,000. He was placed on unpaid suspension.

Zea has been an officer with the department for 17 years, but he has never had a disciplinary action taken against him before.
