BRANFORD – A woman was critically injured when she was thrown from a boat and hit by the craft after a rope got entangled in the propeller.

The Branford fire department responded to the accident between Payne’s Point and Kelsey Island near the Farm River shortly after midnight, Tuesday morning.

Officials believe that the rope got caught in a propeller and  the boat suddenly changed direction, which caused the woman to be thrown overboard.

Acting Deputy Fire Chief Tim Judd said the woman suffered severe traumatic injuries to her left arm, face and back when she was struck by the boat and was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital where she was in critical condition. The man in the boat at the time was treated at the scene.

Branford police, DEEP and the Coast Guard are investigating the accident.
