NEW HAVEN — A federal prosecutor showed jurors checks paid to a firefighter to back the government’s claim that a former Middlebury fire chief operated his private electrical business with town money.

Paul Perrotti is accused of theft for allegedly embezzling more than $70,000 from the town to operate the business from 2011 to 2013.

The Republican-American reports that prosecutors also played a telephone recording Thursday in which Perrotti told firefighter Max Biggins to say he worked at the firehouse.

Perrotti has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer said his client often left jobs as an electric company employee to respond to fire calls.

Biggins testified he didn’t know if he would be paid by the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department, the town, in cash or by check. Biggins began working for Paul J. Perrotti Electric in 2012.
