NEW LONDON — Police are investigating after a man was seriously injured when he was hit by a car Friday night.

Police say the man had life-threatening injuries and was taken by helicopter to Yale-New Haven Hospital after the incident around 9 p.m.

Witnesses told officers who responded to the scene that a car heading south on Ocean Avenue hit the man, who was walking in the road.

Police said a 56-year-old man was arrested after he began interfering with emergency workers trying to help the victim. They said Eddie Alvarez of New London refused to leave the scene and struggled with police.

He was charged with breach of peace and resisting arrest. It’s not known if he has a lawyer to comment.

Anyone with information about the accident is being asked to call police.
