MANHATTAN — A 3-month-old boy was pronounced dead after he fell ill at an unlicensed day care center in New York, authorities said.

Police were called to SoHo Child Care on Monday to help  3-month-old Karl Towndrow, our affiliate WPIX reported. None of the employees were qualified to perform CPR, officials said.

The Health Department has confirmed that the center was operating an illegal child care service.

This death has raised concerns for parents about who should be trusted with precious little ones.

The State of Connecticut has a website to help parents find childcare providers that are licensed and that they have deemed safe. Click here to use the tool to search for local day cares.

Towndrow was transported in critical condition to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the child showed no signs of trauma and the baby had just been put to sleep on his back. The 14 other children at the day care center were picked up by their parents.

A GoFundMe campaign is raising funds for Towndrow's parents.
