HARTFORD — Police have now identified the victim of the city’s 17th homicide as Marcus McDade, 38.

Police responded to an overnight shooting around 3 a.m. on Pliny Street to find McDade suffering from gunshot wounds to his leg and torso. He was transported to Saint Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Law enforcement was notified via shot-spotter technology. No one called 911, Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley said.

On Wednesday, McDade’s sister was seen talking to detectives at the scene. She said her younger brother had six kids and felt strongly about family. McDade lived on Pliny Street, family said.

"It's happening to everyone. It's not just our family. It's not just the next person's family. It's at our back door now,” McDade’s sister Natasha Oyola said.

Mayor Pedro Segarra responded to news of the latest homicide. The city has seen an alarming uptick in violence compared to 2014 which saw only 19 homicides total.

Segarra said he has had discussions with Police Chief James Rovella about increasing incoming police class sizes.

"It's never too late to start the process of making sure that we refill the positions that have been left vacant by retirements,” Segarra said.

The Major Crimes Division is investigating the latest shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Hartford Police.
