"My comrades are sweating overseas right now defending this country and I’ll sweat with them," said Sgt. Misak.
The Hampton native fought in Iraq, Afghanistan, provided relief in Haiti and on this day, he held a sign with the names of the service members murdered in Tennessee, asking for one thing.
"My message is that every troop, their lives matter,” said Sgt. Misak, "they should have the honor to have the flags at half-staff."
Sgt. Misak was in Willimantic on Sunday, asking businesses do the same.
He says he was upset President Obama didn't call for flags to be lowered right after the military members were killed on American soil.
Sgt. Misak’s hope? That those in his home state would listen, including Governor Malloy.
"Everyone out here believes in it and we just need one man to just put the proclamation out," Misak said clutching the sign.
And this marine's call to action did not go unanswered.
The American flag was lowered Monday afternoon.
Governor Malloy issued a directive to put the U.S. and state flags at half-staff to honor those killed in Tennessee saying, “Connecticut and the nation stands with the people of Tennessee and the many communities that have been devastated by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims as they are laid to rest – and with the states across the nation who are mourning the loss of their citizens.”
Sgt. Misak was standing outside the Capitol when the flag was lowered.
"I'm lost for words,” Sgt. Misak told Fox Connecticut’s Jenn Bernstein, “I'm really proud the state was able to come through…and do the right thing and honor those service members."
He then watched as nearby flags were lowered one by one.
"I wasn't just a voice that was lost. Someone actually cared,” said Sgt. Misak.
"They deserve the honor, and that's why I'm out here, to honor them and their families."
