WALLINGFORD–Just months after Amazon’s first distribution center in Connecticut opened, a second one has been announced.

Amazon will be opening a sortation center in Wallingford in a property they’ve leased located at 29 Research Pkwy.

Aaron Toso, who works in Amazon’s corporate communications office, said the new center “will create hundreds of jobs.”

A sortation center differs from a fulfillment center, which is what the new Windsor facility is described as, in that it is all sealed packages that are sorted for shipment. At fulfillment centers, employees sort and prepare items to be packaged and shipped. Both are distribution centers part of the same network, and the jobs are in the same category.

The creation of both types of centers nationwide is a huge push towards Amazon’s desire to expand its same-day delivery service, and to make deliveries quicker in general.

“We look at a variety of factors when deciding where to place a new Amazon facility,” Toso said. “Most importantly, we aim to be as close as possible to customers to offer fast shipping speeds.”

Toso said the company also considers the local workforce and talent, and said Amazon expects “to find great talent in abundance in this area.”

Gov. Dan Malloy’s office released a statement on the news: “We are happy that Amazon, a major retailer for consumers, has again made investments in another Connecticut community. We are pleased that Wallingford will get these added jobs as Connecticut continues to make economic progress every month.”

Although Toso could not officially comment on a timeline for when the center would open, or when job applications would be accepted, he did say it would be announced “in the coming months.”

The new Windsor facility began accepting applications earlier this year, and will eventually work to fill 500 full-time positions at the new 1-million-square-foot warehouse off of Day Hill Road. Windsor’s facility was the first to open in New England, and having a second center will only help to reduce shipping times further.
