ANSONIA – One man is in custody after police say he used a box cutter to attack a witness who tried to break up a fight Monday afternoon.

Police said around 2:20 p.m.  Monday, they were called to 20 Clifton Ave. for a report of physical dispute with a possible knife involved.

When they arrived, a man holding a blanket on his neck told police that he had been cut by Mario Forbes, 31, of Ansonia. The victim said he had been trying to break up a fight between Forbes and Forbes’s girlfriend. The victim told police Forbes had come at the female with a machete and a box cutter.

The victim said he took the machete away and he was then attacked by Forbes with the box cutter and had a severe cut to the throat, according to police. He was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was treated and released later in the evening.

Forbes  was taken into custody at the scene.

Police said Forbes’ girlfriend was also physically assaulted. She was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport where she was treated for a head injury and later released.

Forbes was charged with assault in the first degree, assault in the third degree, strangulation, reckless endangerment, and disorderly conduct.

He was held on $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
