BRIDGEPORT–A member of the Bridgeport Police Department is in critical condition after a serious accident.

On Friday, August 14 Officer Sheldon Mayne got into a motorcycle crash while he was off duty, and according to a GoFundMe page set up to help raise money for his treatment, Mayne has remained intubated and in a coma.

“Bridgeport Police Officers work relentlessly to keep our kids and families safe,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “To have what happened to Officer Mayne is truly heartbreaking.”

Mayne was the only one involved in the accident.

Bridgeport Police Chief Joe Gaudett Jr. said in a statement: “He is a great officer, brother, son, and uncle. The entire Bridgeport Police Department hopes he makes a full and speedy recovery.”

GoFundMe page set up to assist the Mayne family says that the officer is the primary financial provider for his mother, sister and nephew, and any little bit helps.

As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, $13,535 had been raised by 139 people–the goal was for $10,000.

In addition, the Bridgeport Police has also set up an account at the Bridgeport Police Credit Union. For details on how to donate, call 203-374-6500.
