STORRS–A spokesperson from UConn confirmed on Thursday that several employees will be laid off.

The so-called “workforce reductions” will apply to the Storrs campus, regional campuses and UConn Health, according to Stephanie Reitz.

The move is due to restructuring and reorganizations of departments, which led to the elimination of unnecessary positions.

Reitz specified that it was not due to the budget cuts from the state.

Approximately 40 out of 4,800 employees are affected, as well as 11 UConn Health employees. They were notified between July 20 and August 11.

No faculty positions were eliminated, and those that lost their jobs were managers and staff members. Some were unionized, while others weren’t.

The elimination of the positions will save the school $4.7 million, plus an additional $450,000 at UConn Health.

The UConn Health employees work under the Correctional Managed Health Care Division, which provides health services at 16 Department of Correction facilities statewide, the John Dempsey Hospital and 31 DOC halfway houses.
