BOSTON  — The Mexican government has confirmed that a homeless Boston man police say was beaten by two brothers, one of whom said he was inspired by Donald Trump’s views on immigrants, was a citizen of Mexico.

Daniel Hernandez Joseph, consul general of Mexico in Boston, tells The Boston Globe: “We emphatically condemn this specific act of violence against a Mexican national.”

Police say Scott Leader and Steve Leader urinated on the 58-year-old victim as he slept early Wednesday morning, hit him with a metal pipe and punched him.

They were held without bail after pleading not guilty. Attorneys who appeared with the brothers for their arraignment haven’t commented on the accusations.

Mexican officials said they would follow the investigation “very closely” to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
