WETHERSFIELD – Because of a high volume of customers, the Department of Motor Vehicles stopped taking walk-ins at 2 p.m. Friday.

The DMV said if customers arrived before 2 p.m., they would be served. All other appointments at DMV were honored until the close of business at 4:30 p.m.,  including previously scheduled driver license tests and hearings.

There has been heavy customer traffic since Tuesday, when the department reopened after a week-long closure while computer systems were updated.

The department said the system is working as planned, but customer volume has been very high, causing staff to have to work until about 10:30 p.m. for the last three days.

DMV expects another high volume day of customers Saturday when offices open at 7:45 a.m. and close at noon.

Officials attribute some of the delays to the week-long closure, but also to employees becoming familiar with the new system.

The software upgrade required the entire system to shut down all of last week. The DMV is also offering a 60-day extension until October 10 to renew all expiring driver’s licenses, ID cards and registrations.

Customers are urged to review whether any of the agency’s online services can help them.

DMV also offers services online at offers at ct.gov/dmv including:

  • Registration renewal.
  • Customers can check for items that can delay registration renewals like unpaid property taxes, lack of insurance, delinquent parking violations
  • Reprints of registration certificates.
  • Registration cancellations.
  • Ordering vanity plates.
  • Ordering of damaged plate replacement.
