Thursday afternoon, around 4:45 p.m., a young girl was hit by a truck on Ford Street, near Hughes Circle.

When police arrived, they found a 6-year-old Ansonia girl, Leah Rondon, with neighbors who were caring for her while waiting for first responders. The girl was taken to the hospital, and was later pronounced dead.

According to police, Rondon was visiting a friend at the time of the accident. She was in a small plastic wagon that rolled into the road, where the wagon was hit by the truck.

A 54-year-old Ansonia man was driving the truck that hit the girl. Police are investigating the incident and have not yet determined a cause, and no charges have been filed at this time.

Police are also still investigating a fatal crash on Tuesday that occurred on Route 8 near exit 12 in Shelton. A vehicle went down an embankment and ejected a 6-year-old girl from the truck, and that child, Nyah Marcano, died from her injuries.

Ansonia Public Schools is working with Mayor David Cassetti and several city departments and agencies to provide support for the families of two 6-year-olds.

Marcano, a Prendergast student, and Rondon, a Mead student, were about to enter first grade when the new school year started next week.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends and loved ones of these two children,” Dr. Carol Merlone, superintendent of schools, said Friday morning.

Grief counselors will be available over the next week at the two schools.

Parents are asked to call the school for services: Mead School, 203-736-5090, and Prendergast School, 203-736-5080.

A ziti dinner fundraiser is planned for next week at Ansonia High School. Additional information will be announced by Monday.
