NEW HAVEN — Parents whose 19-month-old son died after they allowed a baby sitter suspected of abuse to care for him alone have been granted probation.

The New Haven Register reports a judge granted accelerated rehabilitation to 35-year-old Sivakumar Mani and his 26-year-old wife Thenmozshi Rajendran. Charges of risk of injury to a child and interfering with a police officer will be dismissed in two years if they complete a court-ordered program. They also were accused of falsely telling police the boy was accidentally hurt while with his mother.

The baby sitter, 29-year-old Kinjal Patel, has pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. She is expected to face 14 years in prison at sentencing Oct. 29. Patel told police she was angry with the boy and caused him to fatally strike his head on the floor in January 2014.
